DIY Salt, Honey, Grapefruit and Rosemary Body Scrub

It’s that time again Beauties,
img_0683Lets talk Body Scrubs. I’m OBSESSED with them. I’ve tried a variety of brands. Target, Walmart and Walgreen’s and a few other stores have such a great selection and are very affordable.

There are so many benefits to using body scrubs. Other than making your body feel wonderful, body scrubs have several rejuvenating benefits for our skin. Body scrubs gently remove dead skin cells, dirt, and oil from the outer layer of our skin. This helps to unclog pores and expose your skin’s underlying healthier layers. Body scrubs are great for helping moisture absorb better, and increase relaxation. Incorporating a grainy friend into our soap and shower routine, could be the best kept secret.

Not only is it beneficial, it’s easy to make as well. While strolling on pinterest I came across a blog about this Salt and Honey Scrub with Grapefruit and Rosemary. I’ve made lip scrubs for myself plenty of times. Mostly, when I need to give myself a lip treatment and get rid of dead skin. However, I’ve never actually made my own body scrub. I came across so many DIY recipes. A lot of the ingredients I already had in my kitchen.

I love the color and smell.

To make this body scrub you will need kosher salt, olive oil, honey, grapefruit and rosemary oils and a bit of sugar. I prefer to use kosher salt over table salt. Table salt has anti-caking chemicals in it. The kosher salt dissolves really quickly when you rub the scrub between your damp hands. It’ll soften up to the texture of a good moisturizing exfoliant.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Salt and Honey Scrub with Grapefruit and Rosemary
Fills about 6 half-pint jars. Shelf life 4 months.

2 cups olive oil
2/3 cup honey
1/2 teaspoon grapefruit essential oil
1/4 teaspoon rosemary essential oil
3 cups salt
sugar (optional)
red food coloring (2 drops)

Mix the first 4 ingredients together in a bowl. Gradually mix in the salt 1/2 cup at a time. I find it easier to mix with your hands. If you have sensitive skin use gloves. Continue to mix until the oil is just about absorbed into the salt. It’ll be very thick and mass together with a bit of oil seeping out. If it’s not coming together after several minutes, add salt or sugar in half cup increments until it’s a gritty oily paste (you will need more salt/sugar if using kosher salt and less if using a finer grain salt). Add 2 drops red food coloring and mix well. Add additional essential oil at a rate of 1/4 teaspoon at a time for a stronger fragrance.

You can place your body scrub into your choice of sealed jars. If using metal jars make sure to wipe off your jar before adding the lid to help prevent rust.

To use, scoop a tablespoon of the scrub into damp hands and massage between your hands until you feel a gritty paste. Scrub your face and body in a circular motion until most of the salt crystals dissolve, then rinse.
